Gratitude Saturday
-I am thankful that I can read. It is hard to fathom that only
52% of our population can read! One of my favorite things to do with our children when they were little was to snuggle up together and read them stories. Now that they are older, they prefer to read silently to themselves...but I am thankful that they have learned to enjoy reading. My husband says that he didn't learn to enjoy reading until after we were married. Must have been that first year and a half that we were married...but didn't own a TV. We took turns reading out loud together and covered many books. Our favorites were the 7 books in the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. It's hard to imagine NOT being able to read. What a gift!!

When my parents got married my Dad could barely read, it was a struggle as he had limited elementary education. My Mom ordered Field and Stream magazine and taught him reading (he was an outdoors man). Then as we got older I can remember him asking us to help him sound out words. It was pretty amazing to see and hear yout own father develop reading skills while being a teenager. I remember being so proud that he was willing to learn.

His oldest brother never learned to read but operated his own business. My uncle had a system worked out that bills, reciepts and money would all go in different pockets. After getting home his wife would then sort all the paper work out and
write up the bills. I spent a lot of time in their home but, never knew of his challenge until after his death.

I also am grateful that we have access to education and are able to read.

I can't ever imagine Mike and I sitting down together to read to each other...Mike doesn't like to read at the best of times!! Even during the 6 months a year that our cable is turned off...
That's cool that you spent time doing that.
I often think about how blessed I am to be able to have eyes that function, and the ability to use them to read. I am definately grateful for that!!

I have grown up loving to read as well, and have always loved "loseing myself" in a good book. I could enter a whole other world, by getting involved in a well written story...I am still that way when I read some of the stories in the Bible, especialy some of the Old Testament ones. My favorite being Esther's story.
Another favorite to get lost in, is the Master Potter series...Awesome!

This is a great thing to be grateful for!

I love to read as well, and have been doing alot of it lately, and I am always inspired how God guides us to what books we should be reading.

Thanks for reminding us of this awesome gift!

I absolutely love reading. I couldn't imagine not having that ability.

I think it's wonderful that you read aloud together when you were first married. What a great foundation the two of you have. Very evident in your marriage today.

Love, Rhonda
